6 Different Ways God Speaks to Us

We all long to hear from God.  There are those times when God distinctly speaks to us through a strong feeling or a still small voice in our hearts.  But that doesn’t happen as often as we’d like.  Yet there are ways we can hear from God directly every single day, if only we are tuned to Him.

Here are six different ways God speaks to us in our daily lives.

1. The Word

The Bible is God’s living word – His words to us.  This is by far the most foolproof way to hear from God on a daily basis.  He longs for us to dig into His word and discover what He wants us to know.  There are so many treasures in the Bible that we might miss when we don’t look for it.

God has spoken to me through the verses in the Bible on innumerable occasions.  His words have encouraged me at times when I was in despair.  His words have given me courage to press on, when I wanted to give up.  Specific verses have come to my rescue when I had no clue what I had to do.

God can speak to you through your daily Bible study.  He can speak to you through a verse you might have highlighted in your Bible years ago.  A verse you may have jotted down months ago might catch your eye, and it would be just what you needed to read that day.

Yes, God speaks to us through His Word.  All we have to do is listen.

2. Prayer

We all know the importance of prayer in our spiritual growth.  Whether it is a word of praise, a confession, or a heart rending cry, prayer is one way we can openly communicate with our heavenly Father.  God wants prayer to be a dialogue, but too often we make it a monologue.

I have personally been guilty of just talking to God and not listening.  Over the years, God has quietened my heart and taught me to listen to what He wants to tell me.  When you sit down for your daily prayer time, tell Him all that’s on your mind, and then take a few minutes to just listen.

Our prayer need not be limited to just a time slot, but can be an ongoing conversation throughout the day.  We can be in tune with Him, no matter what our hands are busy with.  And when we least expect it, we will start hearing from God.  When we acknowledge Him throughout our day, He keeps us company.

If at times, you feel your prayers are a one way conversation, take time to wait on the Lord.  He will not disappoint.

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.” (Psalm 40:1)

3. Books

I’ve always been a huge fan of books and read as much as I possibly can.  But up till a few years ago, my selection was limited to secular fiction novels.  It’s only in the recent years that I’ve discovered the wealth of information and inspiration that can be gleaned from Christian non-fiction.

Over and over again, God has used passages in books to draw my attention to what He wants to tell me.  Whether it is the importance of my quiet time, or about being ready to do anything for God, it was a book that God used to open my eyes.

Be on the lookout for good Christian books that will inspire you and help you grow closer to God.  God might just use something in that book to speak to you.

4. Songs

It’s apparent that a vast majority of the world’s population loves music.  And God can use that medium to speak to us as well.  Over the years, dozens of Christian artists have made albums inspired by God, that glorify Him alone.  And since music speaks to our soul in a unique way, it’s a great opportunity to hear from God.

A few years ago, when I lost a good source of income, God used the song “God will make a way” to comfort my heart and give me hope.  My current favorite is “Who am I?” by Casting Crowns.  I am simply in awe that the almighty God would choose to rescue a nobody like me, and call me His own.

In every season of life, there have always been songs that God has used to minister to me in my time of need.  Take some time to build up a playlist of good Christian music.  You might just find yourself a new favorite and start humming it all day.

5. People

Yes, God can use people to speak to us.  God has spoken to me through a variety of people over the past years.  It could be through:

  • a meeting with a friend in real life
  • a Skype chat
  • a family member’s experience
  • a blog post
  • a video

When we connect with people, both online and offline, God can use them to minister to you, and vice-versa.  As we grow spiritually, we too become mediums for God to speak to someone else in need.

6. Nature

Have you ever looked out a window and been amazed at God’s handiwork?  A beautiful sunrise, puffy clouds, a starry night, clear blue skies, a dewdrop on a blade of grass, the chirping of a bird, a breathtaking sunset – all showcase the grandness of God’s glory.

And yes, when we stand in awe of what God created in just six days, He uses that to whisper how much He loves us and cares for us.  On days that I’ve been bogged down, one look outside reminds me that God who created all this will definitely take care of what’s bugging me as well.

These are some ways God has spoken to me over the past years.  How have you heard from God lately?

I heard from God when my husband hugged me. I just found out that I have shingles and was not feeling well. usually, i’m a strong, independent woman. lol but I had been quiet and grumpy. I apologized to my husband. As he was holding me, God spoke “Cyndi, you have to be weak so he (my husband) can be strong.” Just like I have to be weak so God can be strong in my life. I wrote about this in my blog. I have to let my husband and God lead! thanks for your post.
